How Much Does an IBM AIX Server Cost?
Compare buying IBM Power hardware for AIX with running PowerVS. See where the server, Software Maintenance, support, and migration change the real cost.
An IBM AIX server does not have one sticker price. A usable budget combines the configured IBM Power system with AIX Software Maintenance (SWMA), support, and the work required to move the workload. Power Virtual Server replaces the hardware purchase with metered processor, memory, storage, and operating system charges.

Current Power9 hardware prices for AIX
Midland Information Systems publishes Power9 planning ranges and lists AIX as a configuration choice. The range helps you choose which server deserves a quote. The exact configuration and support package decide the final number.

These are current Midland system ranges, not guaranteed AIX package prices.
| Model | Machine types | Published range |
|---|---|---|
| Power9 S914 | 9009-41G and 9009-41A | $12,500 to $28,300 |
| Power9 S922 | 9009-22G and 9009-22A | $20,600 to $52,000 |
| Power9 S924 | 9009-42G and 9009-42A | $20,000 to $28,300 |

How AIX Software Maintenance changes the quote
IBM says AIX is licensed through a Software Maintenance Agreement that is usually tied to one IBM Power server serial number. AIX does not use a CPU-count or concurrent-user licensing limit. One server can run several AIX logical partitions, but PowerVM and its management tools carry their own Software Maintenance requirements.
That makes the serial number and entitlement record part of the buying decision. A server that can boot AIX is not automatically a complete AIX purchase. Confirm what transfers, what must be renewed, and which support services sit above Software Maintenance before you compare offers.
What PowerVS bills
IBM Power Virtual Server meters the resources allocated to the instance. IBM says AIX pricing includes the operating system license and IBM Software Maintenance. The monthly rate is measured by the hour, so processor mode and allocated capacity can change the bill during the month.
On-premises AIX compared with PowerVS
| Cost line | On-premises AIX | PowerVS |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Purchase or lease the configured IBM Power server | Pay for the selected virtual server resources |
| AIX | Confirm the license and Software Maintenance tied to the server | AIX license and IBM Software Maintenance are included |
| Capacity | Activated cores, memory, storage, and adapters | Processor mode, cores, memory, storage, and region |
| Operations | You maintain the hardware and operating system | IBM runs the cloud hardware; you still maintain the AIX operating system |
| Migration | Assessment, testing, data movement, and cutover | Assessment, testing, data movement, and cutover |
Match IBM Power hardware or PowerVS to the AIX workload
A steady workload may reward ownership because the server cost can be spread across years of use. A workload that changes often may benefit from metered capacity. Use the same processor need and service level on both sides. Keep memory, storage, support, and migration consistent.
